September's Birthstone - Lapis Lazuli

Lapis Lazuli is one of the birthstones for September

Did you know that Lapis Lazuli is one of the gemstones for those born in September under the Zodiac sign Libra (September 23 to October 22).

This semi-precious gemstone only comes in blue – but there are, of course, many shades of blue. Its colour can range from deep blue to light blue to turquoise blue and to a greenish blue, with the most prized being a deep indigo blue. Lapis Lazuli, with its intense blue color and its signature flecks of golden pyrite is unmistakable.

The name means ‘blue stone’ as it is really a rock (a collection of minerals rather than a single mineral) and comes from the Latin word for stone ‘Lapis’ and from ‘Lazhvard’ the name of the original Persian locality where it was mined.

The best Lapis Lazuli comes from Afghanistan, where it has been mined for over 6000 years. It is also found in Chile, Siberia, Italy, Myanmar, Pakistan, and India. Lapis has been coveted by mankind and used in jewellery and decoration for more than 6,500 years.

In the Middle East the stone was associated with royalty. Egyptian women, including Cleopatra used powdered Lapis Lazuli as eye shadow. In Europe, the gemstone was called ‘Ultramarine’ meaning from beyond the sea. Historically the art world valued this stone as it was ground up and used as radiant ultramarine paint. To this day, ultramarine paint produced from Lapis lazuli has not lost its brilliance in many an old paintings.

For those who believe in the healing properties of crystals, lapis is used to help those meditating connect more deeply with their inner self, to develop peace, self-awareness and enhance emotional intelligence.
